Majority of parents of Avvai Modern School children come from low-income families who depend on unorganised sector jobs. Parents in some families leave their children with grandparents and relatives in villages and migrate to work as blacksmiths, construction workers in Tiruppur, Bengaluru and Thiruvannamalai.
Every year almost 40 percent of school and van fees are not paid by parents. In schools of Uthangarai, when a parent fails to pay these payments, students are left in their houses. For us it is an inhuman practice. We persuade parents to pay fees. When we insist, they stop sending their children to school and children miss their classes and learning.
We need to pay for diesel, salaries for teachers, pay electricity bill, and buy teaching learning kits and sports materials. School also is required to maintain buildings and its greeneries. Only when we pay decent salary to teachers, they get motivated to work in the school.
We want the school self-sustaining. We require financial or any other means of support to cover the maintenance and educational cost of schooling. Currently about 70 children are studying in AMS and the estimated cost of schooling a child is Rs.20-25,000 a year.
It is not necessary that you have to support the entire schooling. You can bear a particular aspect also. EGC Scheme is one such a plan used in AMS.
Certain pockets of Tamil Nadu including our region face discrimination against female children. This happens in subtle ways. Girl children are sent to government schools and boys are sent to private schools. If there are more girl children in a family, all are sent to government schools. Though government schools also provide good schooling in our area, we wish to provide best quality education to all the children studying in Avvai Modern School.
Since 2022, AMS has introduced Educate a Girl Child Plan. Those families in which there are two girl children, families can pay for one child and the fees of the another girl child is borne by school. Many philanthropic supporters and sponsors work with this plan. About 12-15 girl children are supported by sponsors living in Bengaluru and in United States of America. Avvai School monitors and provide the learning achievement details regularly of sponsored children to sponsors.
